Rise of the Nazi Party (1923–1933)

How Hitler became Chancellor

  • Hitler ran against Hindenburg for President in 1932 but lost.
  • Chancellor Brüning was dismissed and Hindenburg chose Franz von Papen as his replacement in May 1932. However, Papen was not a strong leader and found it difficult to exercise any control.
  • The Nazi Party became the largest party in the Reichstag in July 1932, but Hindenburg still refused to make Hitler Chancellor.
  • After the Nazis lost seats in another election in November, Papen was replaced by Kurt von Schleicher as Chancellor in December.
  • Schleicher tried to split the Nazi Party by offering Gregor Strasser a role, but Hitler refused to allow this to happen.
  • Feeling betrayed by Schleicher, Papen made a deal with Hitler: he would convince Hindenburg to make Hitler Chancellor if Hitler made Papen his Vice-Chancellor. Papen believed he could control Hitler through this arrangement, though he would swiftly be proven wrong.
  • Hitler became Chancellor in January 1933.
