Grammar IV: Prepositions and other grammar functions

Preposition suffixes

  • Suffix -ito/-ita: added to nouns to express either smallness (e.g. like the English ‘little’) or affection/ endearment (e.g like ‘dear’ or ‘cute’). This is formed by adding -ito to masc.nouns, and -ita to fem.nouns. Sometimes, the final vowel -o or -a is dropped before adding the suffix. For example: perro perrito (little dog / doggie), casa casita (little house / cottage), hermano hermanito (little brother / dear brother).
  • Suffix -ísimo/-ísima: added to adjectives to intensify their meaning (like ‘very’ in English). This is formed by adding -ísimo to masc.adjectives, adding -ísima to fem.adjectives, and removing the final -o/-a before adding the suffix, e.g. fácil facilísimo (very easy), bonita bonitísima (very pretty).
