Suffix patterns

  • In Spanish, just like in English, we can change words a bit to create new words. We do this by adding little parts to the end of a word – these are called suffixes. These patterns help us turn:
    • Adjectives into adverbs with -mente (like slow → slowly)
      • If the adjective ends in -o, change it to -a first. Then just add – mente. For example:
      • rápido → rápidamente (quickly)
      • lento → lentamente (slowly)
      • normal → normalmente (normally)
      • fácil → fácilmente (easily)
      • alegre → alegremente (happily)
    • Adjectives into nouns with -idad (like happy → happiness)
      • Add -idad to an adjective to make it a noun. For example:
      • real → realidad (reality)
      • curioso → curiosidad (curiosity)
      • feliz → felicidad (happiness)
      • seguro → seguridad (safety/ security)
      • necesario → necesidad (necessity)
    • Verbs into adjectives with -able (like believe → believable)
      • Spanish does the same as English! Just add -able or -ible to the verb. For example:
      • evitar → evitable (avoidable)
      • comprender → comprensible (understandable)
      • creer → creíble (believable)
      • acceder → accesible (accessible)
