Fred

A Christmas Carol

Previous Module
Next Module

Fred is Scrooge’s nephew. He is initially introduced to the reader when he enters Scrooge’s countinghouse. Though Scrooge treats him with bitterness and dislike, Fred is nevertheless fond of his uncle, not taking his criticisms and complaints to heart. Whilst Scrooge declares that Christmas is a “humbug,” Fred views it in an entirely positive light, exalting the generosity and integrity it evokes.

In the vision displayed by the Ghost of Christmas Present, Fred echoes his pity for his uncle, focusing more on his isolation and solitude, rather than his malice and misdeeds.
