Social inequity: Victorian society

Although A Christmas Carol presents as a universal tale for historical and modern audiences alike, Dickens makes a pointed critique of his contemporary Victorian society in particular (see page 4 for a more detailed overview of the Victorian era). Dickens essentially condemns the strong class divides within British society, and the exploitation of the workingclass by the wealthy. We see this exploitation on a more personal scale between Scrooge and his poor clerk Bob Cratchit.
