But their efforts were rewarded, for the harvest was an even bigger success than they had hoped.” In stark contrast to their previous labour, we can see that the animals now have a common goal of working towards a better future. “All through that summer the work of the farm went like clockwork” – The connotations of operating machinery in Orwell’s simile serves to establish this cyclical lifestyle as the new way of life. The farm seems to run autonomously and without fault, prompting responders to initially believe in the integrity of Major’s system.
