Prejudice

Another intention of Shelley’s text appears to be to critique a society whose tendency is to judge others based on appearance, or external differences, rather than on their internal characteristics. The Creature, in being an unnatural creation that does not fit into the society he has found himself in, becomes an embodiment of ‘the Other.’ This is evidenced most clearly through the Creature’s interaction with the De Lacey family. He initially is accepted into their home by the blind De Lacey father, suggesting that internally, the Creature had qualities that would allow him to participate in society as any other human would. All the De Lacey father could base his judgements on was the Creature’s speech, and this appeared to be enough for him to trust the Creature and welcome him inside.
