Character Analysis

Bertha Mason

Bertha is Mr Rochester’s secret wife, who is locked away on the third floor due to her proposed insanity. She is described as almost inhumane, or animalistic, a creature of lewdness and terror. She doesn’t speak, and only laughs maniacally or grunts animalistically. She is a Jamaican woman, and hence, it is possible that this animalistic description imparted by Jane and Rochester are not true accounts, but as they are unfamiliar or dismissive of other languages and cultures, they find her savage.
