Bessie

Bessie was a maid at Gateshead, and one of Jane’s primary caretakers in her childhood. Although Bessie is initially strict with Jane, her affection towards her grows stronger and soon, Bessie becomes one of the few adults that Jane has an amicable relationship with. Throughout the novel, Jane recalls memories with Bessie telling her stories at Gateshead such as ghost stories. Jane also reunites with Bessie at multiple points in the novel, where they have jovial conversation and Bessie recounts all that is happening at Gateshead. Bessie is really Jane’s only real tie to Gateshead – she is the only person that she misses or likes from the manor, and the only one who missed her when she left for Lowood.
