Hugh Whitbread

Hugh Whitbread is a friend of Clarissa and has a job at court. He is married to the Honourable Evelyn Whitbread who is often quite ill. Hugh often buys gifts for Evelyn. Hugh is incredibly vain and superficial. He is typically seen to be over-dressed, pompous, and privileged. Hugh sees Clarissa in the park that morning, then has lunch with Richard Dalloway and Lady Bruton, the latter of whom he helps write a letter to a newspaper. After the lunch party, Hugh and Richard walk the streets of London where he shops for jewellery for Evelyn.
