Character Analysis

Hannah Thornton

Mrs Thornton is a sharp, formidable woman of iron-will. She reveres her son, immensely proud of his intelligence and business success. Thornton is her number one priority, and she often finds herself awash with jealously at the thought of him finding a wife. She fears her replacement, particularly by that of Margaret, who she believes to be too haughty for her own good and not worthy of Thornton. Mrs Thornton feels easily threatened when it comes to matters of her son, despite her cold, brusque manner and strong opinions. Nonetheless, Mrs Thornton secretly admires Margaret’s courage and passion, especially in comparison to her own daughter Fanny, who is weak-willed and entitled.
