Background Information

Jacobean Society

In Shakespeare’s Era, England was mainly a nation of Protestants, and was dominated by the Catholic Church in the 16th century. The Reformation was a movement initiated by Henry VIII, arguably for selfish reasons such as the ability to divorce his wife, and resulted in numerous changes to the Churches. Following the movement, the Church of England was the national religion in 1534, and this resulted in other religions being discriminated against.
