Character Analysis

Clarence

George, Duke of Clarence is the brother of Richard and King Edward IV. He is used by Shakespeare to demonstrate Richard’s duplicity and immorality. He is too trusting and falls for Richard’s deception when he tells Clarence that he will do whatever it takes to help him despite secretly plotting his death. Clarence’s gullibility generates quite a bit of dramatic irony particularly when he directs the murderers sent to kill him to Richard, not knowing that it was in fact Richard himself who sent them.
