Chapter 9: Dr Lanyon’s Narrative

From this point on, Stevenson switches to a first person narrative perspective, giving us the inner thoughts of both Lanyon and Jekyll. This change in narrative style gives the impression of being allowed into the minds of these characters. Using an epistolary form, Stevenson creates an authenticity to Lanyon’s narrative and intimacy that has been missing from the novella, allowing the reader to witness first-hand the unravelling of the mysteries we have been following.
