An undercurrent which ties the narrative together and can be seen to drive much of the plot’s action is the theme of friendship. Through the turmoil of the novella, the bond between the characters allows Stevenson to explore ideas of trust, morality and loyalty in a way which gives the reader of Jekyll and Hyde a deeper understanding of the socio-historical context.
