Violence against innocents

One of the text’s recurring motifs is the acts of violence against those traditionally viewed as innocents, chiefly young children and older vulnerable victims. The acts are deployed by Stevenson not simply to shock the audience as is a convention in Gothic literature, but to emphasise the erratic and mindless cruelty of characters like Edward Hyde.
