Character Analysis

Daisy Buchanan

Daisy is one of the most despised characters in all of literature. She is perceived as shallow, neglectful, and fuelled with reckless self-interest. However, these qualities of entitlement, conditional empathy, and indecision in times of difficulty are qualities that so many of us possess to a variable degree. Fitzgerald will have known that Daisy’s characterisation would likely frustrate the reader. He crafted her accordingly so as to ensure the story was interesting and compelling, illuminating the way we perceive ourselves.
