Uchendu

Uchendu (pronounced Ooh-chen-do) is the eldest surviving family member of Okonkwo’s late mother. Uchendu takes Okonkwo into his tribe when Okonkwo is forced to flee Umuofia after accidentally killing a clansman. Uchendu greatly humbles Okonkwo with his age and wisdom, teaching him the importance of having a place to retreat to emotionally and physically when times are tough. Uchendu tells Okonkwo that he should take better care of the emotional needs of his family, but the onus is on Okonkwo to act upon this advice.
