Scene-by-scene Analysis

Act 1 Scene 2

Viola is washed ashore with a Captain who saved her following a shipwreck in which she believes her brother has drowned. The Captain comforts her with the suggestion that maybe he survived. He also informs her about the state of affairs in Illyria, including Orsino’s suit and Olivia’s vow, and Viola decides to disguise herself as a eunuch to serve Orsino. Classism: prejudice against people of a lower social status, and privilege for those of higher.
