Scene-by-scene Analysis

Act 1 Scene 3

At Olivia’s house, her gentlewoman Maria chastises a drunk Sir Toby Belch, person’s name that is amusingly reflective of their occupation or personality. Olivia’s cousin, for coming in so late. He is followed by Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a hopeful suitor to Olivia whose idiocy is demonstrated in a match of wits with Maria. She leaves the men to continue their fun, and Sir Andrew’s gullibility is again shown as Sir Toby convinces him to stay in Illyria (and keep funding Toby’s drinking habit) despite Olivia’s total lack of interest.
