Scene-by-scene Analysis

Act 1 Scene 5

Enter Feste! The fool has been absent from Olivia’s court for an unspecified period of time. He banters with Maria before Olivia arrives, at which point Olivia tells her servants to “Take the fool away”, but Feste regains her favour by wittily riddling that she is the fool for mourning her brother’s soul being in heaven. Her steward Malvolio is not so won over.
