Co-founder and leader of the SA

  • Röhm was a close supporter of Hitler, appointed to be the head of their paramilitary force, the SA (also known as the Brownshirts).
  • He helped the Nazis gain power through intimidation, street violence, and protecting party meetings.
  • In 1933, he was given the title of ‘Reichsleiter,’ the second highest political rank in the Nazi Party.
  • In 1934, he was assassinated by the SS in the Night of the Long Knives after Hitler came to see him as a threat
