  • Elizabeth was highly intelligent and multilingual, speaking Latin, Greek, French, and Italian. She had a humanist education, typical of Renaissance royal training, from leading scholars in history, theology, and philosophy. This made her one of the most intellectually accomplished monarchs of her time.
  • She was cautious in decision-making, often delaying choices to maintain flexibility, including in matters of marriage, war, and succession
  • She had survived imprisonment during Mary’s reign, which made her careful and politically astute.
  • She was a skilled public speaker and used language carefully to maintain authority, using debate skills to achieve diplomacy goals.
  • Elizabeth was pragmatic rather than ideological, especially in religious matters, prioritising political stability.
  • She understood the power of symbolism and used it to project strength, virginity, and divine authority. The imagery and title of the ‘Virgin Queen’ helped present her as morally pure and married to her country rather than to a foreign prince like other queens.
  • She balanced firmness with charm to manage nobles and rivals. She rewarded loyalty but punished disobedience decisively.
