  • Elizabeth’s coronation took place on 15 January 1559 in Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth presented herself as a unifying monarch after years of religious conflict. This was achieved by emphasising her:
    • Legitimacy as Henry VIII’s daughter
    • Protestant sympathies in contrast to Mary I’s unpopular Catholic policies and persecutions
    • God-given right to rule
  • Elizabeth was welcomed enthusiastically by much of the population as many hoped her reign would bring religious peace and economic stability.
  • Her moderate Protestant approach appealed to many English subjects and avoided the harsh Catholicism of Mary I.
  • Elizabeth travelled across England on royal progresses, staying in noble households. These visits allowed her to display royal authority, build personal loyalty, and observe local conditions.
