Problems with White Settlement farming

  • In 1854, the government opened Nebraska and Kansas for settlement, predicting economic growth. However, farming on the Great Plains was much harder than in California or Oregon.
  • The land was dry, with extreme weather and few trees for building or fuel. Early settlers struggled to grow crops and build homes, facing isolation and hardship.
  • By the 1850s, California and Oregon were successful due to better farming conditions; this allowed them to export wheat to other parts of the world.
