Applications of Gamma & X-Rays
- Gamma waves and X-rays have the highest frequencies among electromagnetic waves.
- Prolonged exposure to gamma waves and X-rays can be harmful to the body.
- X-rays are used to create internal images of the body by projecting through the body and being absorbed differently by various tissues.
- X-rays are absorbed by bones and dense tissues, allowing for the creation of images to spot breaks, irregularities, and some cancers.
- Gamma rays can track the location of substances in the body using medical tracers that emit gamma rays.
- This process can diagnose issues such as heart problems and can also be used outside hospitals, like tracking water flow in drainage systems.
- Concentrated gamma rays can be used to kill cancer cells by targeting them specifically to avoid damaging healthy cells.
- Gamma rays are directed from multiple angles to minimize exposure to surrounding healthy cells.
- The treatment kills cancer cells by supplying them with large amounts of energy, which they cannot survive.
- Understanding these applications and the types of electromagnetic waves used is important for exams.
