Average Speed
- Objects often have speeds that change constantly during a journey.
- A car's speed can vary due to traffic, speed limits, and changing terrain.
- Other objects, like runners, wind, and sound waves, also experience varying speeds for different reasons.
- Average speed is used to describe how quickly an object completes a journey.
- Average speed is calculated by dividing the total distance traveled by the total time taken.
- The formula for average speed is V = S/T, where V is average speed, S is total distance, and T is total time.
- Units for average speed are meters per second (m/s).
- Example: Calculating the average speed of a marathon runner who completes a 42 km marathon in 2 hours.
- Convert distance to meters (42,000 meters) and time to seconds (7,200 seconds).
- Average speed = 42,000 meters / 7,200 seconds = 5.833 m/s.
- Round to two significant figures: 5.8 m/s.
