Electricity Series and parallel circuits

Components in Series

3:51 Series Circuits
Spec 4.2.2
  • Electrical components are in series if they are part of the same branch in a circuit.
  • Every path around the circuit through one component must also pass through the other.
  • Identifying components in series is crucial for exams.
  • In a circuit without branching paths, all components are in series as there is only one loop.
  • In circuits with branching paths and multiple loops, components on the same branch and loop are in series, but not with those on different branches.
  • Understanding series connections is important because the same charge carriers (delocalized electrons) flow through these components.
  • If a component in series breaks, it stops the current flow through all components in series with it, as the circuit loop is broken.
  • This issue was common in old Christmas lights, where if one bulb failed, all lights would go out, making it hard to identify which bulbs were functional.
