  • Ultraviolet (UV) waves, x-rays, and gamma waves are the highest frequency electromagnetic waves and can be harmful.
  • All waves can potentially cause harm if they are intense enough and exposure is prolonged.
  • X-rays and gamma waves are types of ionizing radiation, which can cause electrons to escape from atoms and form ions.
  • Ionizing radiation can mutate cells and cause cancerous growths.
  • Exposure to large amounts of gamma waves or X-rays can lead to DNA changes and cancer cell formation.
  • It is important to limit exposure to x-rays and gamma waves to prevent cell mutation and cancer.
  • UV waves can cause skin cancer, primarily from sun exposure.
  • Sunlight contains both visible light and UV light, which can mutate cells and cause cancer.
  • UV waves specifically cause skin cancer as skin cells absorb the waves before they reach other organs.
  • UV exposure can also cause premature skin aging by breaking down chemicals that keep skin young and stretchy, leading to wrinkles.
  • Both skin cancer and premature aging from UV exposure typically occur after prolonged exposure.
  • Caution is advised regarding sun exposure, especially on hot days.
