Longitudinal Waves
- Longitudinal waves have vibrations parallel to the direction of wave travel.
- Sound waves are the most common type of longitudinal waves.
- Longitudinal waves can be demonstrated by pushing a spring back and forth.
- Kinetic energy is transferred from the hand along the spring.
- The coils of the spring vibrate back and forth parallel to energy transfer, defining a longitudinal wave.
- Transverse waves differ as they move perpendicular to energy transfer.
- Compressions in a spring are points where matter is pushed together.
- Rarefactions are points where matter is pulled apart.
- The matter transporting the wave does not move along with it.
- Coils gather at compressions and separate at rarefactions temporarily.
- The spring returns to its original position once wave energy is transported.
- The spring does not leave the hands after pushing and pulling.
