Stable Orbits
- A planet or satellite's orbit is stable if it always follows the same path.
- Planets orbit the sun, and satellites orbit planets in circular paths due to gravitational attraction.
- A stable orbit means the object maintains a constant distance from the body it orbits.
- Earth's stable orbit is crucial for supporting life by maintaining the right distance from the sun.
- Scientists believe all planets in the solar system have stable orbits.
- Orbit stability depends on the object's speed and the radius of its orbit.
- The radius affects the gravitational force acting on the object.
- If an object moves too slowly, gravity pulls it inward, potentially causing it to crash.
- If an object moves too fast, it can escape the gravitational field.
- Satellites must maintain a constant speed to stay in stable orbits.
- To change speed while keeping an orbit stable, the orbit's radius must also change.
- A slower-moving object requires a larger orbit to remain stable.
