Possessive pronouns

  • Possessive pronouns are words that replace a noun and show who owns something. In English, these are words like: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. In Spanish, they must agree with both: the thing possessed (its gender and number: masculine/feminine, singular/plural) and the owner (1st, 2nd, 3rd person: I, you, he/she, etc.).
Common Spanish possessive pronouns

mine el mío la mía los míos las mías
yours el tuyo la tuya los tuyos las tuyas
his/hers/yours el suyo la suya los suyos las suyas
ours el nuestro la nuestra los nuestros las nuestras
yours el vuestro la vuestra los vuestros las vuestras
theirs/yours el suyo la suya los suyos las suyas
  • Examples:
    • 1st person singular: Este libro es mío. (This book is mine.)
    • 2nd person singular: Los perros son tuyos. (The dogs are yours.)
    • 3rd person singular: Los archivos son suyos.( The files are his.)
    • 1st person plural: La decisión fue nuestra. (The decision was ours.)
    • 2nd person plural: Las bicicletas son vuestras. (The bikes are yours [pl.].)
    • 3rd person plural: Las mantas son ellos. (The blankets are theirs.)
