Institutional aggression in the context of prisons

The importation model: 👥 Irwin and Cresssey (1962) argued that aggression is a result of individual differences, not being in a prison. This is due to the argument that prisoners will behave the same way inside the prison as they would outside the prison due to their disposition.
Disposition: 👥 DeLesi (2004) researched a group of 813 juvenile offenders and found that certain dispositional traits, such as impulsivity, correlated to violent behaviour. When he compared his research group to a control group, he concluded that dispositional factors affect their chance of being violent.
Deprivation model: 👥 Clemmer (1958) suggested that the intense deprivation inside prisons is a cause of aggressive behaviour. The lack of entertainment and the lack of ability to properly fulfil physiological needs all increase the risk of aggressive behaviour as it increases competition for resources.
