The Bem Sex Role Inventory

👥 Sandra Bem (1974) developed the Bem Sex Role Inventory which consisted of 20 items that represented typically male characteristics, 20 typically female characteristics, and 20 neutral characteristics. She used self-report studies where participants would rate their own personality and then measured them for androgyny and masculinity.
This is a self-report questionnaire so is subject to participants’ biases and results may lack accuracy (e.g. people may have different understandings of what characteristics like ‘leadership’ mean and thus rank themselves differently).
Self-esteem is a potential confounding variable as people with high self-esteem are more likely to rate themselves highly for stereotypically positive characteristics like ‘confidence’ and ‘kindness’).
