Overview of networks

A network is a collection of connected devices (computers, servers, printers, etc.) that can communicate and share resources.
Benefits:
- Enables easy file sharing (no USB sticks needed)
- Facilitates shared resources: printers, scanners, internet
- Allows for centralised management (e.g. to install updates or fix problems remotely)
- Enables collaboration and communication across users
Risks:
- Security threats: hackers can access multiple machines
- Malware spread: one infected device can spread viruses across the network
Factors affecting network performance:
- Number of connected devices/users (shared bandwidth)
- Type of transmission media (wired is faster, more reliable, and less vulnerable to interference than wireless)
- Physical obstacles blocking signals (walls, metal, etc.)
