The Lake District
Attractions for tourists

Natural attractions: scenic landscapes include ribbon lakes (e.g. Windermere), U-shaped valleys (e.g. Langdale Valley), and mountains (e.g. Scafell Pike).

Outdoor activities: hiking, cycling, and water sports.

Cultural attractions: historic sites include Beatrix Potter’s house and Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage

Impacts of tourism

Social impacts: tourism supports local services and jobs, but overcrowding (e.g. Ambleside) reduces residents’ quality of life and decreases affordability.

Economic impacts: £1 million spent annually by tourists, but many jobs are seasonal or low-paid. Heavy reliance on tourism makes the economy vulnerable to fluctuations in visitor numbers.

Environmental impacts: footpath erosion (e.g. Scafell Pike), litter, and traffic congestion all damage the area.

Strategies to manage impacts of tourism

Traffic: park-and-ride schemes to reduce congestion.

Footpaths: stone pitching (laying stones to create a durable path) repairs erosion on busy routes.

Litter: bins, signage, and volunteer clean-ups promote responsible behaviour.
