If Mae is a version of Maggie that has successfully satisfied her role then the same can be said about Gooper in comparison to Brick. Gooper is a successful lawyer with a large family and by his own account a hard-working contributor to the plantation. On the surface, he seems like a man that any parent should be proud of, but instead he is treated barely good enough to “spit on” by Big Mama and Big Daddy. Despite basing his whole life around climbing the societal ranks and making his parents happy, it is clear that Big Mama and Big Daddy have little interest in Gooper, the former at times not even recognising him as her son. Through this, Williams once again implies that the pursuit of wealth and submission to convention prevents true fulfilment and connection and instead promotes “envy” and “greed.”
