Mr Robert Martin

He is a farmer working on Mr Knightley’s estate who lives a simple life, making a decent wage to support himself and his family. Emma uses Mr Martin’s inferior social status to convince Harriet to seek out a more superior candidate for marriage. Yet, his social worth does not limit his ability to treat others with respect and work hard. Even when Harriet refuses him, he does not give her the cold shoulder. Instead, he provides her with distance and asks Harriet’s hand again when he sees that she is indeed willing to marry him.
