Key Theme Analysis

Appearance and reality

In Hamlet there is a very hazy distinction between how things appear and how they actually are. Many characters act with some pretense, or in some way conceal their truth, making it difficult to determine what’s real. This trickery escalates into madness for many of the characters in the play. When analysing the effects of this blurring between appearance and reality on the characters, it’s important to consider their subjective framework.
