Bianca

Othello

Bianca is Cassio’s lover, though she is described throughout the play as a prostitute and “whore” by Iago. Despite this, Bianca is in love with Cassio and dedicates herself to him, even though she is never a priority for him. A great technique to incorporate here is the symbolism of her name: ‘bianca’ means ‘white’ in Italian. This works against the typical image of someone who is a courtesan. Hence, you could in your essays discuss the disjunction between the reality of someone’s character in comparison to how other characters perceive them in the public light, which is of course a key theme in the play as a whole.
