The role of women

During the time in which the play was set, the role of women in society was to be good wives and to bear children. As such, they were required to be loyal and obedient to their husbands. It therefore comes as no surprise that when Capulet determines that Juliet is to wed Paris, the strength of the women in the play is undermined, and Juliet, as the principle and strongest woman in the play, faces the most severe ramifications for her determination and rebellion against Capulet’s and Paris’ wishes.
