Scene-by-Scene Analysis

Act 4 Scene 4

It is late during the evening and the Capulets, with Juliet’s nurse, are still urging the servants to complete the cooking for the wedding. The nurse tells Capulet to go to bed saying that he will be sick and tired in the morning for the big day if he does not. However, despite this he continues to supervise the actions of the servants in their preparations. He hears music as night turns into day and knows that the bride’s groom is already approaching. As such, he sends the nurse to wake Juliet.
