  • Elizabethan adventurers were motivated by a combination of:
    • Economic motives: desire for new markets, wealth, resources (especially gold, silver, and spices), and trading routes.
    • Political motives: competition with Spain and Portugal for global influence and colonisation.
    • Religious motives: spreading Protestantism and weakening Catholic powers.
    • Technological developments: improved ship design, navigation tools such as the astrolabe, compass, and better maps, enabled longer voyages.
    • Personal ambition: adventurers sought glory, status, and patronage from Elizabeth.
  • Privateering allowed adventurers to attack Spanish ships legally, enriching themselves and England.
  • Achievements included establishing trade links, charting new territories, and laying the foundations for future English colonies.
  • Adventurers contributed to national prestige and the image of England as an emerging maritime power.
  • Successes: circumnavigation of the globe; raids on Spanish colonies; first contacts with India; partial colonisation of Roanoke.
  • Failures: early colonies often failed due to poor planning, harsh climates, and conflict with indigenous populations.
