  • The Lakota Sioux were one of the most powerful and influential Plains tribes during westward expansion. They lived across the northern Plains, particularly in present-day South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
  • Lakota society was organised into bands, with strong warrior traditions and respected spiritual leaders known as medicine men.
  • The Lakota relied heavily on buffalo hunting and became highly skilled horse riders. Horses transformed Plains life in the eighteenth century by increasing hunting efficiency, mobility, and military power, making tribes like the Lakota dominant over rivals.
  • Lakota religious beliefs emphasised harmony with nature and guidance from spiritual visions which influenced leadership and decision-making.
