Oklahoma Land Rush (1889)

  • The Oklahoma Land Rush opened former Native American land to white settlement. 
  • Thousands of settlers rushed to claim land under federal law. On 22 April 1889, thousands of settlers lined up to race and claim 160-acre plots of land. There were 7 land rushes in total.
  • This event was the final phase of westward expansion.
  • Fraud and conflict were common during land distribution.
  • By the 1890s, most Native Americans had been confined to reservations.
  • The frontier was officially declared closed in 1890, and Indigenous control of land was largely destroyed.
