  • Index notation is used to show a number repeatedly multiplied by itself
  • The base is the number being repeatedly multiplied
  • The index is the number of times the base is being multiplied by itself
  • Example: 5 x 5 x 5 can be written as 5 to the power of 3
  • Example problem: 2 to the power of x is equal to 8
  • Step 1: Write the answer as a repeated multiplication of the base number (2 x 2 x 2 = 8)
  • Step 2: Find x by working out the correct index (2 to the power of 3 = 8)
  • By comparison, x is equal to 3
