Algebra Graphs

Parallel Linear Graphs

3:36 plot graphs of equations that correspond to straight-line graphs in the coordinate plane; use the form y = mx + c to identify parallel lines; find the equation of the line through two given points, or through one point with a given gradient; use the form y = mx + c to identify perpendicular lines
Spec A9
  • Parallel lines have the same gradient
  • The equation y = x has a gradient of 1 and a y intercept of 0
  • The equation y = x - 2 has a gradient of 1 and a y intercept of -2
  • The equation y = x + 2 has a gradient of 1 and a y intercept of 2
  • All three equations have the same coefficient of x, 1
  • Parallel lines will never meet and will remain the same distance away from each other along the whole line
  • To find the equation of a line parallel to a given line, find the gradient and y intercept of the given line and substitute those values into the equation of the parallel line
