Adding or Subtracting a Negative Number
- When adding negative numbers, a positive sign next to a negative sign makes a negative sign.
- When subtracting negative numbers, two negative signs next to each other make a positive sign.
- The first step when adding numbers together is to rewrite by changing the two signs next to each other into a single sign.
- Drawing a number line can be helpful for these kinds of calculations.
- When subtracting, move to the left on the number line.
- When adding, move to the right on the number line.
- Perform the operation by moving on the number line.
- 5 plus negative 6 is equal to -1.
- 3 minus negative 5 is equal to 8.
