- Algebraic fractions can be added or subtracted in a similar way to normal fractions
- Fractions can only be added or subtracted if their denominators are the same
- If the denominators are not the same, one or both of the fractions should be multiplied until they have the same denominator
- To find a common denominator, multiply the numerator and denominator of one fraction by the denominator of the other fraction
- The lowest possible common denominator may not be obtained using this method
- Simplify fully by expanding brackets and collecting like terms
- Example: Simplify x/2 - (x+1)/7 by finding a common denominator of 14
- Example: Simplify 2/(x+5) + 3/(x+1) by finding a common denominator of (x+1)(x+5)
