Advanced Quadratics - Inspection Method

6:26 Factorisation
Spec A1 A4
  • Some quadratics with coefficients of x squared greater than one can be difficult to factorise using the regular splitting method
  • These quadratics can be factorised by inspection using the cross method
  • To factorise using the cross method, find a factor pair for the quadratic term and a factor pair for the constant term
  • Multiply one factor from each pair along diagonal lines and add the products to get the linear term
  • Experiment with different factor pairs until the correct match is found
  • Once the correct match is found, add horizontally to find what goes in the double brackets
  • Always check the answer by expanding the double brackets to ensure it matches the original expression
  • Repeat the process if the correct factor pairs are not initially found
  • Make sure to consider negative factors when finding factor pairs for negative constant terms
  • It is important to check the answer by expanding the double brackets to verify correctness.
